Planning for Medical Consultant Interviews
Becoming a consultant is considered to be the pinnacle of a medical career. It’s only natural that medical consultant interviews are extremely challenging and require a lot of preparation. If you are about to undertake a consultant interview, then you will be at a stage in your career where you have a wealth of medical knowledge. While this will be tested in your interview, the role of a consultant also involves a lot of managerial responsibilities.
As a consultant, you will be expected to manage a team, resolve conflicts between colleagues and participate in teaching, as well as treating patients. When undertaking your medical interview preparation, while you should spend some time becoming up to date on the latest medical developments, you should also become familiar with NHS structure and managerial techniques.
Prior to your interview, spend some time talking to colleagues, particularly one’s with managerial responsibility, about what their job entails and what skills are considered particularly useful. Write a list of all the skills that a consultant needs, and brainstorm the experience you have that could fulfil those needs. Think about the themes that they could ask questions about and research around those themes.
Once you are well researched, ask a colleague to conduct a mock interview with you. You should aim to spend around two or three minutes on each answer, so make sure you are giving plenty of evidence to substantiate your statements. While you should seem prepared, the most important thing in an interview is to appear relaxed and confident.
