Rhabdomyosarcoma | Prevention and Prognosis
Duration
Rhabdomyosarcoma continue to grow until it is given. Without proper treatment, the cancer eventually will spread to the lungs, bone marrow, bones and lymph nodes.
Prevention
There is no way to prevent most cases of rhabdomyosarcoma. However, anyone who wants to conceive a healthy child should stop using recreational drugs and smoking. These harmful chemicals may increase the risk of a rhabdomyosarcoma or other medical conditions the child during birth or in the future.
When To Call a Professional
Call your doctor right away if your child develops a lump or swelling persist somewhere in the body, especially around the eye, arm or leg, into the vagina or around a testicle. Also, call your doctor if your child has blood in the urine, difficulty urinating, painful urination or unexplained runny nose, ear or vagina.
Forecast
The prognosis depends on the group of tumors. With treatment, more than 80% of children with rhabdomyosarcoma survive group 1 without a trace of the disease. This percentage falls to 50% of children in groups 2 and 3, and falls to less than 20% of children in group 4. In general, children with a variety of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma respond better to treatment than those with the alveolar type. If the RMS is not responding well to treatment, the child will die of this disease. It is important that the child see a pediatric oncologist who can help coordinate the treatments for this disease.
