Vasectomy

Sterilization (vasectomy) is a minor surgical procedure to cut and turn off the vas deferens (vas deferens). The procedure takes about 30 minutes, the procedure usually causes few complications and no worsening of sexual function. Vasectomy is performed about 500,000 per year in the United States. A vasectomy is less invasive than a sterilization surgery in women. An increasing number of couples choosing vasectomy as a permanent birth control.

The male reproductive system

To understand what a sterilization (vasectomy) is needed to understand the male reproductive system and how it works. The testes are located in a bag in the penis called the scrotum. Each testicle is connected to a thin coiled tube, epididymis (epididymis), where sperm are stored and mature in 6 weeks. Epididymis is related to the prostate gland with a pair of tubes called the vas deferens. Vas deferens is part of a larger bundle of tissue containing blood vessels and nerves and lymphatic vessels, known funikel.

Operation

A urologist performs a vasectomy and the procedure takes about 30 minutes. The patient keeps the clothes from the waist up and lying on his back. Pouch (scrotum) is injected once or several times with a local anesthetic (lidocaine) vas deferens entering the skin of the scrotum and a small incision (usually 1 cm or less). Vas deferens then drawn out through the incision, cut in two places, and about 1 cm segment removed. Each end of the vas deferens are tied or cut off and surgically placed behind the scrotum. The cut and sew procedure is repeated on the other side of the scrotum. Some urologists will burn the ends of the vas deferens, but others believe that the burning is unnecessary and would complicate the healing process. Most men can go home immediately after surgery.

Vasectomy without scalpel

This method uses a forceps to hold the vas deferens while a point cut (instead of a clip) is performed with special forceps. Forceps are opened to stretch the skin and thus makes a small hole to remove the vas deferens, share it, burn it and return it in the scrotum. Point Average do not need to be sewn. Some urologists recommend scalpel vasectomy method, but because it is faster and minimizes inconvenience after the surgery and reduces the risk of bleeding and infection. More vasectomy performed by this method.
