Just as humans sometimes require energy boosters such as glucose to revitalize themselves in order to continue working, so do the beneficial bacteria found in our bodies only that, these bacteria use probiotics instead of glucose. Probiotics is a common term used to mean, “for life”. Their work is simply to supplement the beneficial bacteria in our bodies with additional help in order for them to undertake their duties more efficiently.
A common probiotic supplement that is mainly used in today’s world, is the Lactic acid bacterium (LAB). This bacterium is well known for its ability to transform sugars into lactic acid. Having this knowledge, scientists around the world have been able to use this bacterium to produce milk products such as yogurt which are usually consumed by many people. In the process of making this product, the bacterium is usually mixed up with industrial milk and is left to consume some estimated quantity of this milk. As this process is underway, sugar in the milk which is in the form of lactose is also consumed by the bacterium. Having consumed this sugar, the bacterium in turn converts it into lactic acid and then releases it back into the remaining amount of milk. The milk mixes up with this acid and as a result of this action, the milk turns sour and in the process forming yogurt. When yogurt-loving people get to consume this product, they ingest the Lactic acid bacterium as well. Once the bacterium is inside the body, it helps out the other beneficial bacteria found in the body to perform their duties properly.
One role that this probiotic supplement would undertake, is the role of lowering pH levels around its environment. This action makes it difficult for pathogenic bacteria which only cause harm to people, to survive in that area. Therefore, with many Lactic acid bacteria in our bodies, infections such as gastrointestinal are rare to occur.
Another benefit that could be realized when the Lactic acid bacterium is in the body, is the improvement of the immune system. One way that the LAB does this is by, topping up the number of white blood cells in the system. This way, the immune system is in a good position to fight most of the harmful bacteria it finds on its way. The LAB also trains the immune system to be alert all the time and be able to distinguish between toxins that can be tolerated and toxins which should not be left to exist in the body.
The Lactic acid bacterium could be ingested into the body orally through the consumption of yogurt. Over the last couple of years, this method has proven to be a safe way of consuming yogurt and without a single doubt, the most enjoyable. However, for those of you who are critically ill, the probiotic supplement could be inserted into your body either through the use of a special tube that can feed it directly into the intestines or via other therapeutic methods that your doctor may find to be appropriate.
